Post Run Chills & a #KeepTightGear #GIVEAWAY

Ever since I started running, I have had a problem with post run chills.  Whether it is 100 degrees outside or 35 degrees outside.  More often than not, once I stop sweating, the chills and the shivers take over me.  And I don't get warm unless I have the heater blasting at MAX or I get under a scalding hot shower.

I decided to do a little investigation.  Here are the tips on how to prevent the Post Run Chills from Runner's World (my notes are italicized):

  • Get out of the cold and head indoors quickly after a run. Standing around in the cold talking to your running buddies while wet is a sure way to induce the shivers.  (unfortunately, quite a bit of time is spent post run chatting.  How am I going to get my pictures in??)
     
  • Change into dry, warm layers post-run, including socks and shoes.  Bring a complete change of clothes, a towel to dry off, and a warm, dry hat. Try to change while your body temperature is still elevated (sweating).  (I am not sure how practical this is.  Not only would I have to lay out my clothes the night before, I would have to lay out an extra change of clothes.  YIKES!  The laundry!)
     
  • Drink something warm (tea, soup, broth, etc.) to replenish fluids and help warm from the inside. It’s also a great way to warm your hands.  (How am I going to keep it hot?)
     
  • For those that are sensitive or always cold, consider putting a heat wrap on your lower back for the drive home. Like heat warmers in a car, it helps to keep you warm while driving home in a cold car.  (Lucky my car has seat warmers!)
     
But what exactly causes the post run chills?  There is a super scientific explanation here.  Essentially, here is what I think is the reason.  When you run, your body warms up.  When you stop, your sweat starts to cool down.  When that thermostat kicks in, it may go into overdrive in cooling your body down and may end up over regulating.  Get it?  I don't and I don't have an answer to stop this phenomenon because as I stated above, I am NOT bringing a change of clothes!  

So what do I do?  I bring a warm hug!  AKA a KeepTight Iron Fleece Performance Cloak.

But to me, this hoodie is like a warm hug!  This IronFleece stuff feels like someone has wrapped you in a cozy embrace.  It is super warm which is good for thin blooded San Diego girls like me and GREAT for my awesome friends in Maine, MN and everywhere else in between!


It comes in grey and pink and black and pink.  


This is no thin cheap material.  This is iron tough.

  1. After my long runs, I immediately jump in the shower. If I stay in the wet/sweaty clothes, the my post run chills are really bad!

  5. I hate the post run chills! If I'm racing, I always make sure to put warm clothes in my checked bag to put on right after I finish. If I'm training, then I make sure that I get home quickly after running and get into a nice warm shower to help me warm up.

  8. I always get cold after a race! I check a bag with a sweatshirt, no matter what! If it's a cooler day I start with a layer around my race that I put on IMMEDIATELY!

  9. First of all - I am ALWAYS cold. If the temp is 74 degrees or lower, I am piling on the layers. For post run chills, I keep a cozy blanket (or a very large towel) in my Jeep. Am intrigued by this jacket. Thanks for hosting the giveaway. ~DB (Monica)

  13. I only get the chills if I race/run hard and am sweaty on cool rays... which I guess is alot because I live in Chicago. I need this fleece! Seriously... it is cold here! I need a hug, too!

  14. Sometimes I get them, but usually only after long hard runs over 8 miles, I just bundle up and try to rehydrate/refuel, warm soup helps a lot!

  15. I get the chills after running so I jus put on a long sleeve running shirt to keep warm. If I worked up a pretty good sweat I usually just change my clothes. The fleece looks warm and cozy.

  18. I get the post-workout chills! The trouble is I have to fit my workout in between work and my daughter's activities so I stay in my sweaty gear way too long. That jacket looks like a great solution!

  22. Have you tried using a HydroFlask bottle to keep a hot drink hot? My running buddy got one this summer (to keep water cold for after our runs) and I just got one for Christmas. Took some hot chocolate along while we went sledding and it was still piping hot when we were done!

  23. I only get the chills when I stand around and chat or stop to snap pics, like you said :)
    Usually I get home and put on a fleece, stretch, and jump in a hot shower. Unless it's a Sunday long run, in which case food comes first!

  25. I get this too! If I can, I will get in a hot shower as quickly as possible. Sometimes I'm so cold that when I get out I'm shivering all over again! If I can't get in the shower right away (my husband is in it) I will change out of my sweaty clothes and jump back into my pjs! Oh and a hot cup of coffee is a must.

  26. I do get post run chills. I always take a really hot bath or shower to warm up. This last Sunday, I actually did pack a shirt to change into after my half. I was sooo glad I did!

  27. I live in New England so post-run chills become the normal especially around this time , doesn't mean they're fun though! I always make sure I have hand hotpacks around when I'm racing. Then once I'm home its straight to the shower and keep the drain closed so the water keeps me feet warm

  28. When training last year for my half marathon, I ended up getting the chills while running. It would hit me around mile 8 and happened often. My training partner told me the "science" reason behind this, but I don't understand all of that. I worked through it after a few more miles :)

  29. I DO get post run chills, so I turn up the furnace and jump into a warm shower as soon as possible. Also, a cup of coffee after my shower always helps take away the chill. :)

  30. It depends. Sometimes if I do not drink enough water I do. Other than that, I try to keep hydrated because NOBODY likes chills!!

  31. I get a post run crash too but it is often due to low blood sugar. I get the chills and nausea. Ick! I hope this new jacket works for you. Maybe I will get the chance to give it a try too!

  33. Since running is about the only time I have to catch up with friends, we often stand around after a run to finish our conversations. (So we may be a bit chatty.) As soon as I get home, it's grab a cup of coffee that has already been brewed and jump into a hot shower!

  44. I do get post-run chills! If I have to drive to my running trail I do bring an extra layer of clothes - for example, I'll bring an extra sports bra and cotton t shirt and a hoodie. I don't usually need to change into dry pants unless it's raining. I just change in my car under a blanket and I feel a lot better until I can get into a hot shower!

  50. Um..... I live in Maine. I live in constant chills! LOL. But seriously, yes. I have to take a piping hot shower to warm up. I also have issues with Reynauds were my fingers turn white and go numb....hot showers take care of that too. I NEED THAT JACKET!!!

  65. Sometimes I get post run chills, other times no. If it is cold outside, I'm particularly likely to get the chills. (The Disney World 5k was especially tough, since Disney didn't have heat sheets and I hadn't packed for cold weather.) Immediately I try to add layers or grab a heat sheet, and if possible put on dry clothes (especially a hat).

  74. When it is cool outside I get chills also and I love getting into a hot shower right after getting home. If I am out I love to turn up my cars heated seats and get comfortable. I don't usually have problems in the summer unless I have become dehydrated.
