Carlsbad 5000 All Day 20K Recap: In Pictures & a CONFESSION!

Hi Everyone!  I am slowly getting thru all of the posts I have to do but I am about to have the craziest next few months so bear with me!  News: We are MOVING...maybe!  Stay tuned!  (In San Diego but to a different house - more to come!)

That said, let's talk about the Carlsbad 5000 and the All Day 20K.  For a full explanation of this race, read my recap from last year.  This recap is going to be about pictures, friends, bling and confessions!

The Carlsbad 5000 is a Rock n' Roll Marathon Series Signature event.  Meaning, as a Rock n Blogger, I got to sign up for the All Day 20K for free.  BUT same day packet pickup is available to all participants!  Jenn and I made plans to meet up at the start so I can pick up my shirt and bib.  I soon also met up with Kristin and Nicole.

With the All Day 20K you get you own gear check, your own ports potty and snacks in between races.  Then it was time to set off for the first 5K.  Kristin made it.  I didn't.  (part of the upcoming confession)

Instead, I used that time to catch up some Blends (Blogging Friends)!

From left to right: Diane, Me, Jenn, Debbie, Sarah, Kristin.

Then Diane's awesome husband, Martin of MarathonPitStop fame!

Some Rock 'n Blog love: Linzie, Me, Lisa and Debbie!  So excited to meet Lisa in real life after all this time!

Then Terry and Christine from Moms Run this Town!

Sheri from the San Diego chapter of MRTT.

Awesome Christina from Live Laugh Love Run Yoga and Ink n Burn Ambassador!

The super fantastic awesomely sweet Cristina from the SD MRTT chapter and my very good friend!

Some ProCompression represent!  Left to right: Jenn, Jenny, Me, Carlee, Linzie

See?

Quick pic at the start line and I was off to run the 5K for my age group - the 3rd in the series.  BUT WAIT!  Didn't you sign up for the All Day 20K?  Yeah, epic fail.  I was up late the night before volunteering at Ragnar and I just didn't have the energy.  I only ran one.  I am sorry but I had to make the right decision for my body.  That is my confession.  Hope you can forgive me!

I followed behind Ryan and Carlee for the first 1/2 mile or so but I could tell they were feeling good so I let them pass me.  Speaking of cute running couples...how about these two??  Jenny and Sean make me smile!

I didn't run a PR (I have 15 pounds to lose before I get back there) but I did run a respectable 31:50.  Not fast for you but definitely fast for me, currently!

I "ran" into Nicole and Asia at the finish line.  How does Nicole look that good after busting a super fast speed on the 5K?  I am a sweaty mess!  Ha!

We celebrated our medals at the Pro Compression booth!

And the Beer Garden.  Pizza Port made special brews just for this race!  An IPA and a Mexican Lager.

Ran into Debbie just like last year!

And finally, some more MRTT mamas to finish off the day!  Lisa and Shell!  Awesome day!  Awesome friends!  Awesome course!  Will DEFINITELY do it next year!  Not sure about the 20K part of it though...I was just too tired!

But be honest!  Do you think I am a giant baby for deciding not to do the 20K?  My body was run down and "not in the mood."  In the end, I think I made the right decision for me.

And finally, I am linking up with the Weekly Wrap hosted by HoHo Runs and MissSippiPiddlinwith Megan and I am also linking up with #MotivateMe Monday, hosted by Run Mommy RunFitness Cheerleader and Running Rachel

Have you ever signed up for a race and then ran the lower race distance instead? What was your reason?

As always, I wish you Happy Feet,
SD Mom

  1. You ALWAYS have to do what is best for your body! And look at it this way, you can always do it again next year!

  2. What a fantastic race and one of the highlights was YOU. I loved getting to meet you, I only hope that we can run some nice slow long miles IRL someday.

  3. NO, you are not a giant baby! Being up all night at the Ragnar race took a lot out of you and it looks like you were busy all day with lots of friends anyhow(always fun). Being older, I was lucky because my race was run early before I got pooped out. You youngsters don't have it as easy :) I really enjoyed this race. Great pictures! Lastly, but NOT least...I so enjoyed finally meeting you in person and look forward to seeing you in June at RnR San Diego! Good luck with your move, if you go forward with it.

  6. If you didn't feel 100%, you definitely made the right decision! It looks like you spent a wonderful day hanging out with lots of blogger friends. That's the best part. I have changed race distances. I was supposed to run a half and sprained my ankle a few weeks before the race. I healed pretty quickly but decided to run the 5k to play it safe. Thanks for linking with us SD.

  7. I think overall listening to your body and knowing when it needs a break trumps any race! I'm so glad you did that and hey it does not look like you missed anything! How very cool RnR sponsor this, I had never heard of it before now.
It was a great time Smitha and you always look so cute! Thanks for linking up with us!

  10. It was SO great to meet you IRL! I totally understand your decision to only run one 5K, you know your body and have to do what is best for it. Lots of runners just push thru and end up paying for it later. I love that you blogged about it too, because it inspires me (and others) to take care of ourselves when we need it, no matter what we signed up for! Thanks for the shout out. Hope to see you at another race soon!! XOXO

  11. You have to do what's best for your body. Good call not running the all day 20K - you could have ended up injured or worse.

  12. This was such a crazy weekend for you, I'm actually really happy you didn't run all 20k. I support your choices.

  13. How could anyone judge you for doing what's best for you?! Sounds like a fun day overall!
